Can Quake 2 brick a PSP?

Yesterday some user flamed this into the comments.

Aug 16, 12:19 AMWTF!!! Jonathan.S@cox.netGod Damnit!!!I ran your Quake 2 Multiplayer Beta 2 for the PSP, and it looks like it bricked my PSP!!!!!!!!!!!Your readme said that the single player may not work, but said nothing about possibly bricking your PSP if its ran!Is there anyway to get my PSP to power on now?!?! It just comes up to a black screen after it shut off, stays black for 6 seconds, then turns back off.I wish to god I never ran this game!OK, you really need to list this….My PSP was stuck unable to power on at all after running that single player mode on your game.I took the memory card out, nothing, removed the power pack, nothing, hard reset, still did not power on.It was not until I stuck a completely different mem card into my PSP that did not have the Quake folders on it, that it finally came on.

So the question is can Quake 2 brick a PSP or result in such a strange behavior?

  • Quake 2 does not access the flash. There is not part of Quake 2 that would require to access the flash and you cannot damage a PSP without writing to flash, because all changes are non-permanent without flash access. So the PSP is restored after switching it on again. No matter what happens when Quake 2 has been crashed. Everybody can take a look at the source code of Quake 2 PSP to proof this.
  • General RiskNobody except Sony knows what exactly is going on when you start a Homebrew. So there is always a risk to brick the PSP when every you start a homebrew.
  • Custom FirmwaresAll Custom Firmwares are a collection of bad hacks and modules from different firmwares. Nobody can predict the results.
  • There are tons of strange homebrews in the world, when ever you use one of the PSP skin tool, you access the flash and can possible brick your psp. Maybe you do not notice immediatly.
  • However I do not belive that Quake 2 may brick the psp. So stop cry and do not bitch me!

I am lazy, very lazy. All demo, PSP and Optimus coding is fun (and for learning of course) and I spend a huge part of my spare time with it.

At the moment I am too lazy to program for the psp. I rather spend a lot of time outside in the sun and enjoy my days with friends and family. When the weather is fine I play beach volleyball with my brothers and friends. I know there are a lot of people waiting for a Quake 2 PSP with singleplayer like I announced in the last posts. But I don not have a good reason to sit in the house while I can enjoy the summer sun.VolleyballBut there is some hope for you: I setup my PSP development environment on my notebook, the weather gets worse, the schools started again so my familiy is away a half of the day and Evoke preparation and party will be over next monday. So I can sit on the balcony and code for a few hours in the morning. I also finished some Quake 2 PSP stuff but I was to lazy to post about and there also will be some Optimus stuff too soon.Maybe this is a good moment to say thank you to everyone who likes my stuff and left a nice comment so I notice the respect for all my work. This keeps me going on.
