Emergency Exit

The greedy Apple

Posted in Development, Mac by McZonk on the March 7th, 2008

I was really excited when Apple announced the free, offical iPhone / iPod touch SDK yesterday. My girl friend has one of these wonderful devices. I downloaded the SDK today and played with the simulator until my girl was back from work so I can test on real hardware. But there is a little problem:

Codesign error: no certificate for identifier "iPhone Developer" was found in your keychain

They want to have money for being a registered iPhone developer, so I can sign my code for the device. I am so disappointed by Apple like never before. I had written such a nice game perfectly fitting to the touchscreen and now that. You have to pay for the iPod, you have to buy an Intel Mac and now I should pay for being a developer that wants to support this platform to make it more popular. Fuck you, you greedy idiots! I think a lot of people think the same way as me. So a lot of great programs will never be written or released.

My girlfriend is afraid of jailbreak the iPod, but it seems to be the only option.

That sucks man. Everything apple sells is way overprice anyways.

Have you been making any progress on quake 2 lately? Any chance we could get a build soon?

Wait for firmware 2.0 release, it seems to be just a bug. Jobs on SDK presentation said, that they are going to support freeware (exepct porno, viruses and so on ;-))

    I disagree..

That fee is a once off fee, you can then upload the project to the iTunes store and sell it there for a certain amount and you’ll get some contribution back!

    However freeware might come soon!

I have the worst development exeprience on my life, I’m coming from the windows mobile world, and is Apple world really suck !
Compiler XCode is an half work, lot of problem miss a lot of thinks.
I had the same surprise about the certificate.. Apple is raising money with the people that wanna support the development… iTune is a piece of crap ! the IPhone is nice for the interface but miss everything related to another WM phone !
unfortunately I need to port my VoIP client to IPhone I hope at least I can begin my work !

Same here (except for the part where you coded something whereas I just wanted to see a blank app as an initial test :)).

I don’t think the $99 fee is a bad idea for the part where you can then upload your app to the App Store. It limits the very crappy apps from polluting the App Store. (people just wanting to mess around) And since Apple is hosting, it makes sense to have to pay I think.

However, I was really expecting to be able to try applications on the phone while connected to my laptop… I haven’t thought it through, so I might miss a reason why they wouldn’t want that. When you unplug your phone, does the app stay installed on the phone?

If that’s the case, it then makes sense from the point of view that Apple wants to keep the control of the distribution of all apps running on iPhones. What I mean is that if you write something without paying the fee, and then install it on your iPhone through XCode, you can give it to me, and I install it as well, Apple then losing control. I’m not saying it’s good but for them it makes sense. However if the application is deleted when you unplug the phone or quit XCode, it sucks to have to pay at that point… I’m sure many developers or wannabe developers would just like to make some tests and only if they end up with something working and interesting would pay the fee to distribute it, as opposed to pay to test it and maybe never finish it…

@Tim - unfortunately, it doesn’t even allow us to build for the simulator without codesigning.
