Emergency Exit

The greedy Apple

Posted in Development, Mac by McZonk on the March 7th, 2008

I was really excited when Apple announced the free, offical iPhone / iPod touch SDK yesterday. My girl friend has one of these wonderful devices. I downloaded the SDK today and played with the simulator until my girl was back from work so I can test on real hardware. But there is a little problem:

Codesign error: no certificate for identifier "iPhone Developer" was found in your keychain

They want to have money for being a registered iPhone developer, so I can sign my code for the device. I am so disappointed by Apple like never before. I had written such a nice game perfectly fitting to the touchscreen and now that. You have to pay for the iPod, you have to buy an Intel Mac and now I should pay for being a developer that wants to support this platform to make it more popular. Fuck you, you greedy idiots! I think a lot of people think the same way as me. So a lot of great programs will never be written or released.

My girlfriend is afraid of jailbreak the iPod, but it seems to be the only option.

Finally …

It took a while but finally Apple has released an Update to fix the keyboard issue I have written about.

Apple Update

I am happy wih my Mac after the phase of being really annoyed with it. The USB issue is not really a probem for me and I know it will be fixed fast and reliable as soon as I hand in my computer for a few days.

Good bye Leopard, Back to Tiger …

Posted in Mac by McZonk on the December 14th, 2007

I am really annoyed by Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) and thinking about going back to Tiger. Can you here it Steve, I will probably downgrade my MacBook Pro!
I always loved my Mac but at the moment, I am really unhappy. The USB malfunction is not that critical for me, because I rarely use it. All the problems with Leopard give me some lousy feeling when using my Mac.
Instead of wasting so much time for implement completly useless Cover Flow in the new Finder, Apple should focus on removing bugs, because Leopard is full of smaller and bigger bugs.
When the keyboard has the hiccups and working become impossible I begin to really unhappy with my Mac. There are a lot of blogs, threads and news about Leopard problems. Additionally there are no new killer features like Expose in 10.3 and Spotlight in 10.4. In my opinion Spaces is the best new gadget in Leopard and except the keyboard problem I can accept the problems but this issue makes me think about downgrade to Tiger. Sad but true …

My faulty MacBook Pro

Apple Bug My wonderful, beloved MacBook Pro has some bad problems. Well Leopard has some strange minor bugs, especially in the new features. But new Xcode and improved Interface Builder excuse a lot. I waited a long time for improved versions of those programs and the weak Xcode compared to Visual Studio is one of the reasons, why I cannot completly switch to Mac OS X.
Sadly I have a really annoying software bug since a few days and after some research I am not alone with this. On some MacBook Pros with Leopard (10.5.0 and 10.5.1) the keyboard stops working properly after putting the system to sleep once. The input is not processed all time, it exposes for a few seconds once or twice a minute and make working impossible. The only solution to this is a reboot or plug in an external keyboard.
When I attached my normal keyboard to the notebook, it also did not response. It was the first time I tried to use an USB device on this MacBook Pro and my external HDDs or the PSP are also not working. I guess my USB controller is faulty.
My only hope is that I have very good experince with the Apple support. But I need my notebook and cannot give it away for a long time :(

My new PowerBook

Posted in Development, Mac by McZonk on the November 29th, 2007

MacBook Pro

I know that it is called MacBook Pro, but after 3 years of using a PowerBook it is hard to change. Optically there are not much chances. The small FrontRow reveiver and some other plugs, two hooks to lock the display and the buildin iSight camera. A major design difference is the size and the weight. It is even lower than my old PowerBook and it weights less. But the dimesions are a little bit greater and this causes that it does not fit in my old neoprene sleeve.

MacBook Pro

The main reason for buying it was that I now can develop 3d stuff while I am outside. I always hated the ATI card in the PowerBook. My new system has a Geforce 8600M GT with 256MB. Not as powefull as the GTX in my workstation, but for me the feature set is more important.
I never had the feeling my old notebook is too slow, but the new machine is way faster: the boot process, the workflow, the searching and exspecially the compiling, everything. I liked the power pc architecture but also like Intel processors.

MacBook Pro

The camera has an awesome quality and scroll with two fingers is so nice. Well, I had iScroll2 installed, but it is so soft and you have to keep more distance between your fingers. FrontRow is wonderful when I lay on my bed and can control music. The most diffucult decision was: glossy or normal display. Well glossy displays have pretty nice colors, but when the sun shines on the screen it is like a mirror. I usally use my notebook in the university, in a train or even outside, so I chosse the normal display and I am totally happy. It is bright and colorful.

MacBook Pro

I will write a seperate article about leopard and its new features and problems. And for all the guys that was waiting for: I also continue Quake 2 dev soon.

Dashboard always in foreground

Posted in Mac by McZonk on the October 9th, 2007

The dashboard is a really useful gadget in Mac OS X. But sometimes you want to have a widget always on your desktop, not only when you focus the dashboard. So here is another trick. You can access a lot of hidden Mac OS X features with the command defaults.
Enter this line in the terminal and restart your dock.
defaults write com.apple.Dashboard devmode YES
When you now leave the dashboard while you are dragging a widget it will be on your desktop like a normal application window.

Fun with Mac OS X windows

Did you know you can animate the minimizing, Exposé and Dashboard effects in slow motion when you hold down the shift key? Pretty old :)

But did you also know you can freeze a window in its deformed state and you can still use it? It also works with playing videos and other kind of windows.

Home, Sweet Home

iMac The last exam has been written and Das Fest is over. The Beatsteaks was really good and I finally travelled home to family. I will prepare for finish my stuff for the next Evoke now. No lessons until october.
I am writing this text on my brother’s brand new iMac with a 24 inch screen. I really should think about getting a new notebook. A MacBook Pro with a Geforce 8 seems to be a nice piece of hardware for me. But it is so expensive, that I will have to work during the semester break. My old Powerbook G4 without FrontRow and iSight is too slow to compile voluminous projects.
My other PSP is here at home too, so I can start to work on AdHoc networking in Quake 2. I have a 1.5 and an 3.xx OE console to test. I have no idea why Quake 2 does not work with the new custom firmware. Maybe it is the network module problem that Cadu reported. I will not care about that at the moment. I do not see any reason to install the “patch-fix-patch-moreisogaming-patch-patch-patch-fix-patch” firmware. Perhaps I really should add the iso-protection again. I am really sad about the amount of people that came to this site searching for “crush psp iso”, “quake 2 psx iso” or similar.
In the last days I was relaxing at my girl’s family and did not code. I will continue my work in the next days. I already mentioned that I have written a mod for Quake 2 and I want to see it working on the console. But I primary enjoy the days with some old friends, so do not expect too much.

Safari on Windows

Posted in Windows, Mac by McZonk on the June 15th, 2007

Safari has huge problems on my vista. It is not usable at all. I wanted to make some speed checks and compatibility tests, but even the simplest sites does not display correctly.

I tried my start page google.com. See how it looks on Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, and Safari 3. The was no error on the first look, but the “More…” link is missing.

Similar problem on my blog. Obviously apple thinks that links and titles are not up to date in modern internet. Who will care a site loads faster if it is displayed with critical problems.

I will continue using my Firefox on Windows until Steve is able to keep his promises.

Big Brother’s Eye

A few words about the visitors. Since I have posted about Quake 2 again and pusblished a link in a few boards, I got a lot more visitors from those sites. But I also get a lot of visitors from other search machines, google.com and I person from yahoo.com. I guess, there are some people who were really disappointed.

A lot of people are looking for “psp lua”. Sadly I just wrote a few words about the bad programs that was made for psp with lua. I assume, there is a problem with the copy of C.R.U.S.H., because some misdirected people was looking for “crush iso problem”, “error crush iso” or similar. Here is a hint for you: Buy the game and play, it is worth it. “milkytracker psp” and “linux ai” are also a common search terms, that refer to my site without being releated to it. Summed up around 50 percent of the searched to this blog are misses. The most correct search machine hits I get with “quake 2″, “optimus mac”, “emergency exit” and “macbook”.

Obviously it is pretty important adding a few words to get more visitors. Let me check if I can lure some people to click my homepage: Sex is nice word to test. Hard to get a hit here, maybe “psp sex”. But perhaps I can use some word I never used on this site before: I saw the road sweeper in a parallel universe while I was sitting in a rocking chair.

I’m also very impressed about the used operating systems and browsers. Since I have a lot of Apple releated stuff, I don’t wonder that I have above average of Mac and Safari users. The top 4 browsers are: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera, all others are below 5%. The operating systems are mure more interesting. Unbeatable Windows XP is the number one, but I wonder why Windows Vista is only used by 1.5 percent. I will take a look if this changes when Crysis is released. This is another good word for luring people, “psp crysis” :)
